The importance and added value of user-friendly applications

It is one of the most common requirements for a new application: it must be user-friendly. This is included in almost every job description, but why is user-friendliness so important? In this article colleague Willem Janssen explains exactly what it means, what the characteristics are and what user-friendly applications provide for customers.

Why is usability so important?

It sounds like an open door. After all, there are few companies that strive for a complex application that is not easy to use.

Since the advent of web technology and especially mobile apps, the demands on the degree of user-friendliness have risen considerably. Almost everyone is used to using a smartphone. Downloading and using apps has never been easier. This habituation also takes people to the workplace to work with other applications. It is still a reality that the applications needed to do our work are less user-friendly than we are used to privately. This requires regular training to really understand the application.

That is why suppliers pay a lot of attention to developing user-friendly applications. Oliver IT strives to provide an optimal user experience within every application they develop.

What is usability?

User-friendliness can be defined as the extent to which users can effectively and efficiently use the functionalities of a system or application to achieve their goals. In short:

Look + Feel = Usability

What characterizes user-friendliness?

There are several properties that characterize this high level of user-friendliness. In the design and development of applications, Oliver IT strives to score the maximum on the points listed below.

  • The look should be calm, consistent and therefore predictable (intuitive).
  • Among other things, the feel says something about:
    • the convenience - e.g. using a slider instead of a checkbox,
    • about the performance - e.g. the screen responds immediately when the button is tapped,
    • about connecting to the user's expectations - e.g. when used on a tablet, the user is used to the apps working more or less like the other apps,
    • about making work easier - e.g. no unnecessary actions, redundant information or too much information at the same time.
  • Calling the right data at the right time.
  • The right feedback to the user at the right time.
  • Preventing things from going wrong - e.g. preventing an error message after saving by making incorrect entries immediately impossible.

The benefits of user-friendliness?

Optimal usability clearly provides added value for the users of the application:

  • Makes the work more pleasant and that promotes motivation.
  • Reduces the chance of errors and thus saves time to make corrections.
  • Saves time in using the application and thus increases productivity.
  • Less or no time needed for education and training to use the application.
  • Increases acceptance and involvement of colleagues.
  • Reduces the detriment risk of a new solution.
  • Business card to customers and/or chain partners if a solution is used with them.

The simplicity of user-friendly applications

Whether it concerns web or mobile applications, Oliver IT attaches great importance to the development of user-friendly applications. We continuously test design and build against the mentioned features in order to realize the intended benefits for our customers. In doing so, technology acts as a real added value for organizations to make work easier, more efficient and effective. It starts with the power of simplicity. We help companies redefine this simplicity within their organization and processes.
